Star Trek was a half hour cartoon by Filmation based upon the television series with the original characters (with most of the original actors doing their voices). It lasted two seasons for a total of 22 episodes, sixteen in the first season and six in the second. Many of the writers for the cartoon series were the writers for the original television series and also went on to write for Star Trek: The Next Generation and other Star Trek series. Note that Walter Koenig, the actor who played Chekov on the orignal Star Trek series and a prominent science fiction writer in his own right, wrote an episode even though his character wasn't even in the animated series. Many of the actors had to do more than one voice, a practice that was common in animation at the time because you only had to pay one person for two voices. James Doohan did three character voices in twelve of the episodes and four character voices for the other ten. The series premiered on September 8, 1973 on NBC and was a Filmation Production.
